What to Look For - Zoom Ranges

Tied into the lens consideration is the zoom range. This dictates the level of magnification available and as such is a very important feature. Magnifications are listing in two ways: magnification factors such as 4x or as a range of focal lengths. Some cameras offer very long zooms like 21x that enables you to get really close to distant subjects, and others offer wide-angle lenses like 24mm or even a combination of both.
You may also see a digital zoom listed on some cameras, but this function can seriously degrade the image quality, especially at higher magnifications. Our advice is to ignore the digital zoom. In fact, you can often disable it completely in the camera’s menu.
