The flagship model in Panasonic’s FX range, the Lumix DMC-FX500 offers a wider angle than most compacts. Usually, wide angle zoom compacts start at 28mm (35mm equivalent) but on the FX500 Panasonic have opted for a wider 25mm Leica optic. The total zoom range is 25-125mm, providing a useful coverage range.

On the back of the camera, a massive three-inch LCD screen utilises touch-screen technology, offering easy operation. Other useful advanced functions include Intelligent Auto mode, high definition (HD) motion picture recording, HD component output, plus a rather neat slide-show function complete with music.

The Intelligent Auto mode comprises various new functions, such as Intelligent Exposure control and Digital red-eye correction. Intelligent exposure controls ISO sensitivity to increase the exposure of dark areas in backlit shots and to control extremes in flash lighting. Old favourites like the Mega Optical Image Stabiliser (OIS) and face-detection found on other FX models are also still included.

The HD functions make the camera a perfect partner to any HDTV owner, looking to playback images on screen.

Along with 50MB of internal memory and a slot for SDHC or standard SD cards, the FX500 is sure to attract attention and is priced at about £330.
