The K200D is Pentax’s new DSLR aimed at entry-level users but sports a number of features to satisfy more experienced camera enthusiasts. It incorporates a 10.2 megapixel APS-sized CCD sensor and inherits a Shake Reduction system. This shifts the position of the CCD image sensor to deliver an extra 2.5 to four shutter-speed steps.

This might be Pentax’s most inexpensive digital camera but there’s nothing cheap about its exterior shell. Its body has a high-quality finish and feels robust and solid thanks to its stainless steel chassis. Comfortable handling is ensured by its well-formed rubberised rip. Controls are logically laid out to ensure fuss-free operation.

It has a useful LCD panel on it’s top-plate, like the Canon EOS 40D and Samsung GX-10. This displays information on settings such as the aperture and shutter value, battery life and number of images remaining.

Utilising a couple of the short cut buttons can speed up operation. The Fn button enables swift access to white-balance, flash, ISO and drive mode. It is also possible to apply a custom colour or monochrome setting quickly (via the Fn button) by adjusting the contrast, hue and saturation to suit your subject matter or personal preferences. There is a Raw button located on its front side (next to the lens mount) that enables you to shoot a single PEF or DNG file before it switches back to its previous image file setting.

Overall, the K200D is a safe bet for customers who want a camera that offers all the essential functions in an easy-to-use and inexpensive package.
