The Olympus E-510 digital camera proves that bigger isn’t always better. While it is one of the lightest and most compact DSLR’s, it boasts a range of features to take on the best of the rest. Inside the E-510’s strong outer shell are a dust reduction system and 10 auto scene modes as well as all the manual and semi-auto exposure modes that you’d expect from a DSLR.
However, demanding action photographers might find it wanting in a few crucial areas. It’s three frames-per-second (fps) output speed might pass the minimum standards for a DSLR, but it has a limited seven image Raw buffer in burst mode so it can slow you down. However, it does feature a focus tracking facility that is available in continuous autofocus mode.
It is not all bad news with the E-510 though, as it can display a full-time Live View on the LCD screen. This means you don’t always have to compose using the viewfinder, making it easier to capture and frame images from low or high angles, but you do need to use manual focus in this set up.
Olympus’ own image stabiliser is built into the body, thus giving you stabilisation on any lens you attach. This is activated by the IS button located on the rear of the camera body. The gyro sensors pick up and reduce camera shake, using its Supersonic Wave Drive in one of two modes; horizontal and vertical for general use or vertical only for example when panning to capture moving sports imagery.
