The latest product to roll off Nikon’s DSLR production line is the D60 digital camera. This is Nikon’s entry-level detachable lens model but it still manages to incorporate a 10.2 megapixel sensor, standard sized 2.5in LCD and a host of in-camera retouching facilities.
This DSLR is a pretty small model but its dimensions certainly don’t impede its operation. Its controls are simply laid out, making it trouble free to adjust settings quickly and precisely.
The D60’s build quality feels robust enough with no indication of any loose fittings anywhere, although its outer shell lacks the refinement of the higher-priced models such as the Canon EOS 40D. Its three autofocus points are its most obvious limiting factor compared to the nine on offer from the Canon EOS 40D and eleven on the Samsung DX-10.
With its new image sensor cleaning system, the Nikon D60 definitely matches the higher priced models. It features all the usual manual and semi-automatic modes as well as several auto picture modes, including a useful night portrait option that combines a burst of flash and ambient exposure for use in low-light environments. One of the most distinctive features of the D60 is its retouching menu with options such as red-eye reduction, monochrome and filter effects. It is even possible to process Raw images in-camera.
Overall the D60 is a solid all-round performer with bonus points for ease of use. But it’s main attributes are simply its small size, weight and temptingly low price point.
