The people that use genuine underwater digital cameras are those where it is usually used in the course of their work as these cameras are very expensive Using an underwater digital camera requires skill as you are operating in a foreign environment Many waterproof cameras are ok but they cannot be submerged for more than a meter below the surface of the water
I for one would love to have a proper underwater digital camera but this is not likely to happen and I really don’t go into the sea often enough to make it worthwhile.
There aren’t that many manufacturers of these specialist cameras owing to the problem of water ingress into the cameras case and the pressure they have to work under. The closest electronics has ever got to producing underwater digital cameras are producing underwater casings for digital cameras. As a make-do, it woks quite well; converting an ordinary digital camera into an underwater camera.
Before you rush off and buy one of these clever cases there is some information about underwater shooting you need to know.
Remember that as you farther down you go underwater, the more the light diffuses. To over come the darkening of images that will happen because of the diffusion, certain white balance settings can be altered which will cure the problem. You will also notice when you see the pictures taken underwater that they appear larger than they should; this is part of the magnifying effect water has. Many novices make the mistake of not checking the viewfinder carefully to make sure they are going to take a picture containing exactly what they want in the final shot.
It is a good idea to make sure that the camera won’t leak whilst you are diving so just hold it under the water for a few seconds to be on the safe side. which will allow water to access the case so look for this as well. To help combat any condensation, place a silica gel pack or two inside the camera case carefully making sure the camera will still work.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with your underwater digital camera by adding other lenses that may come with it. The likes of macro lenses will allow to take close up pictures for example.
Also, remember to always wash of salt when you’ve used it under salt water because if the salts are not washed off, in time they will crystallize; and cause leaks in your camera case. In cases when sand seems to get into the case, it is best washed off with streams of water.
