The Canon EOS 40D digital camera has a three-inch LCD monitor which is the biggest display on a DSLR currently on the market. Its true usefulness is revealed once the camera is in action, as it now delivers a Live View mode which makes framing images at oblique shooting angles much easier.
It packed feature list offers a total of 20 image quality choices. These include six different JPEG settings and 12 dual output options for JPEG files with a Raw or new sRaw (2.5 megapixel) file format.
However, the 40D’s true appeal lies with the action photographer, thanks to its impressive 6.5 frames-per-second performance with a burst of around 75 large JPEGs or 17 in Raw files. It has a maximum shutter capability of 1/8000sec to ensure that the action is frozen for even the most high-speed subject matter.
The 40D’s autofocus system is one of the quickest and most accurate. It has nine autofocus points with a new cross-type autofocus system. This enables it to achieve focus on both horizontal and vertical planes.
Overall, the 40D is priced to attract both the amateur and semi-pro and it will particularly appeal to sports and action photographers. It features some rubber environmental seals across its connectivity points and incorporates an effective anti-dust sensor cleaning system. Its solid construction means it will withstand regular use. The only downside is that it is a little heavier than some of its similar opponents.
