- 3x optical zoom
- Optical image stabilisation
- 2.5in LCD
Like the majority of compacts in this company, the eight mega pixel Canon Digital IXUS 80 IS features a 3x optical zoom. Although it is the same range as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS3, it doesn’t have the same wide-angle view - only 38-114mm. That said, it boasts the manufacturer’s image and stabilisation and has a handy 3cm macro option.
One other nice feature is the inclusion of an optical viewfinder. Not only can this come in handy when taking snaps in bright sunlight, but it also stops you taking pictures at arm’s length. Sadly it isn’t particularly clear.
Build quality is very high. We especially like the smooth finish of the superbly modern aluminium body with its flush-fitting buttons. Other notable features include a high resolution (230,000 pixel) 2.5in screen, 18 scene modes and motion detection.
Face Detection
Face Detection autofocus is welcome, especially with the auto zoom feature and the subject-tracking option, but the subject’s face must remain square on.
AiAF
In addition to the ubiquitous Face Detection mode, the maker’s default nine-point AiAF system is one of the best on test.
Red-eye
A bright orange lamp is used for AF assist and to reduce red-eye, but the IXUS 80 IS also has in-camera red-eye reduction in playback mode.
Memory
The little IXUS 80 IS comes with a 32MB memory card, but you will want to budget for a decent capacity SD or SDHC card.
